September 1-30-Documented Rights
The National Archives at Atlanta features more than 80 documents, images, photographs and sound recordings that chronicle the evolution of human and civil rights in the United States. From a slave manifest dated 1844 to the five cases that comprised the 1984 Brown v Board of Education decision, the exhibit gives voice to those who fought for or championed personal rights and freedoms. Each of the exhibits five historic theaters features a signature personality and thematic song. FREE ADMISSION. Throughout the month of September, the Clayton County Headquarters Library will display items from the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrating the U.S. Constitution and art work by Jerome Lawrence. September 5-The South Metro Caribbean Festival
The Caribbean Association of Georgia with partners will host their first annual South Metro Caribbean Festival 12:00pm to 8:00pm at Clayton County International Park (The Beach), 2300 Highway 138 SE Jonesboro GA 30236. The cultural celebration is open to the public with a $3 parking fee (commercial vans and buses are an additional fee.) Access to the beach area will cost $10 for Adults and $8 for Children. The National Archives welcomes Benjamin C. Ridgeway Author of "Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church" Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of America's most historic churches. It was founded in 1886. From a small group of believers, many of whom were fromer slaves, Ebenezer has grown to an internationally known church with over 4,000 members. The church has welcomed presidents and statesmen to speak and attend services there. Its most famous member, Martin Luther King Jr., was baptized as a child in the church. In 1960 Dr. King became co-pastor of Ebenezer with his father, "Daddy" King. He remained in that position until his death in 1968, and his funeral was held in the church. Benjamin C. Ridgeway is an educator and has been a member of Ebenezer for more than thirty years. The book will be available for purchase, and the author will be available to personally autograph copies for guests Saturday, 2:00pm. The session is free.
